Hungry bin. A continuous flow worm farm.

Simon from KCDC has given us a worm farm!!!!  Room 10 assembled it today and added our food scraps we have been collecting.  We remembered the instructions Simon taught us and followed them while putting the Hungry Bin together.  For the best environment for our worms we have to limit the amount of citrus (mandarins and oranges) scraps.  The worms also don't like spicy foods, onion, garlic, leeks, capsicums, meat and dairy, bread, pasta and processed wheat products.

RAINBOW POEMS

The children have made some stunning Rainbow Poems which are brightening up our back wall in the classroom.  Feel free to pop in and have a look and read.  The children needed to write positive describing words about themselves for each letter of their name.

How to make Bangers.....

Click here to be taken to the website that will show you step by step instructions on how to make an origami banger.  Imagine this is what is happening to give us the loud noise of thunder during a storm.

  1. Thunder is the sound caused by lightning. Depending on the distance and nature of the lightning, thunder can range from a sharp, loud crack to a long, low rumble (brontide). The sudden increase in pressure and temperature from lightning produces rapid expansion of the air surrounding and within a bolt of lightning.

e-asTTle

We have spent a little bit of time changing everyones passwords and making sure all members of room 10 can login and access their e-asTTle information.  You are also able to login and see your child's next steps and achievements at home just by following the instructions below.

Max to the Max - Maths Energiser Game

WARNING = This does create a loud environment in class while playing!

A fiercely competitive Room 10 playing Max to the Max as a starter for our maths lesson.

The children need to make a decision on where a number (rolled by the dice) should go to ensure the largest number is created.  Eg:  The highest number should go in the largest place value.  In this particular clip, I've used a 10 sided dice instead of the standard 6 sided dice.

Skills the children are working on while playing are:
Place Value
Addition (using working form)
Probability

Bread Mould Experiment

On Wednesday 11 June, we sealed up a piece of white bread in a zip lock bag.  Before we sealed the bag, we moistened the bread.  We all knew some mould would grow but we didn't know exactly how it would form.

Bread with NO water added

Bread with water added but left in a dark cupboard

After 8 days our bread started to look rather revolting!!!!  Turns out the mould growing on our bread is called 'Rhizopus Stolonifer'.  The interesting thing we found out was that moisture certainly helped the moulding process as our bread without water only had a tiny speck of mould growing.

Riley's bread is growing something much different!  We are wondering what it could be as he used water from home and was in a hot place until its arrival at school.

The tiny speck of mould is all that grows on the 'dry' piece of bread which was bagged on the same day.
This is the bread from the cupboard.  Growing only where the water was added.
Oakley's Joke = Why did the mushroom go to the party?  Because he was a fungi (fun guy).

After 20 days growing mould, some interesting things were beginning to happen.

The dry piece of bread only seemed to grow the green mould variety.

The bread with moisture added grew a whole heap more!!!  Yuck!!!

In this clip we saw that fungi grows until there is no more matter to consume.  Ash-Lee and Vanessa's bread seems to be doing something similar.  The mould and fungi growing is breaking the bread down and as it crumbles, it is getting smaller and smaller.

Ethans bread has developed quite considerably since the last photo update.
There are harder blobs of yellow (it looks like egg yolk).  You can also see the hyphae reaching out for more organic matter.

Planting at Pharazyn Reserve

On Friday 6 June, Te Aramoana syndicate travelled to Pharazyn Reserve to plant native trees.
The council are trying to re-create the wetland area and we get to help each year which is awesome!

Composting - Session Two

We had so much fun today making our mini worm farms.  Every child in Room 10 has made one today and they'll be bringing them home if they can transport them safely.

Composting - Session One

Today Simon Calcinai from KCDC spoke to us about composting and what sort of material can go in one.  We talked about 'Nitrogens' = Wet and 'Carbons' = Dry
Eg:   Some examples of Nitrogens are - Apple, Sandwich, food scraps, plums, grass, manure
Some examples of Carbons are - Sawdust, newspaper, ash, egg shells, hay
We also talked about waste that we shouldn't put in our compost.  For example, meats, plastic, cans, dog poo!
We also talked about Therma and Verma composts.  Verma are our Worm farms where the worms do all the work.  Therma composts are the composts that need sun and water to get all the bacteria breaking the matter down.

Week 5

This week we are lucky to be starting our 'Waste Management/Composting' unit.  This week we have two sessions with Simon Calcinai from KCDC on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon.  He has emailed the Te Aramoana teachers and we are going to need the following for some of the activities;

·        Homework: We will be making mini-worm farms during lesson three. Students will be asked to bring from home a clean 2L milk bottle, and some compost ingredients (preferably in an ice-cream container or similar). As backup, I will have spare milk bottles, and we can find some compost ingredients around the school (e.g. leaves, grass clippings, shredded paper…) I will give a reminder during lessons one and two.

AND ON FRIDAY........
Arbor Day
Planting Trip to the Pharazyn Reserve, Waikanae Beach, on the 6 JunePharazyn 1.jpg
Each year, 5 June is Arbor Day. This day is also called World Environment Day. For the seventh year in a row, the Pharazyn Reserve Focus Group has invited primary school pupils from Kapanui and Waikanae Schools to be involved in planting  at the Reserve.
This Friday (6th June) children from each of the Te Aramoana Syndicate classes will travel to the reserve by bus, and parents are welcome to travel by car and join us to assist with the planting.
Before the Pharazyn Reserve was named, it was the Waikanae Waste Water Treatment Plant. Over the last eleven years since decommissioning, the ponds and immediate surrounding areas have been undergoing a natural sanitation process.  The entrance to the Reserve is located at the junction of Rutherford Drive and Paetawa Road, Waikanae Beach, and extends from the eastern side of the ponds to the beach.
The Pharazyn Reserve Focus Group was set up nearly a decade ago from public nominations and since then planting and planning has begun around the pond areas, based on the 20-year Management Plan for the Reserve.

Over the last few years about 6000 grasses and flaxes have been planted by school children along the eastern and southern sides of the southern pond.

This year more grasses and flaxes will be planted in a different area of the southern pond.

On the day

Class groups will spend approximately ¾ hour on site. Along with planting plants and maybe mulching, there will be a talk and planting demonstration. The children will also be given an opportunity to look at how the plants planted in the past few years have grown. Members of the Pharazyn Reserve and supporting groups will be supervising and helping the children to plant.
It will be important that we keep to the scheduled times of arrival and departure as children will be coming and going all day as we have other pre-arranged activities at school. Please note that Rooms 6-7 will need to leave before 9 o’clock so those children will need to be at school early.
