First Aid in Room 10

A massive day of learning for Room 10 today.

Each of the children received a booklet which they worked through.  Louise from the Red Cross was fabulous and taught the children vital information and strategies.

We covered:
DRSABC - Danger, Response, Send for help, Airway, Breathing, Circulation
Shock
Choking
Nosebleeds
Broken Bones
Burns and Scalds
Poisons

In order for the information to sink in further, the children will bring their booklets home so they can show everyone how it's done :)

Louise explaining how to put someone in the recovery position on Adam.

Photos of the children doing it for themselves.

Helping someone who is choking.....
We played a game to help us remember.  The hard part was, we weren't allowed to TALK!  Soooo hard for Room 10 ;)

Humpback Whale washes up on Waikanae Beach

After an incredible day at Whakarongotai Marae, a beautiful humpback whale washed onto Te Ati Awa ki Whakarongotai shores of Waikanae Beach.  Very special.

Maori have a long association with whales.  While whales provided food and utensils, they also feature in tribal traditions and were sometimes guardians on the ancestors' canoe journeys to Aotearoa.  Oral histories recall interactions between people and whales in tribal stories, carvings, specialised language and place names.

Mr Campbell saw the importance and sent as many classes as he could via bus to see the adolescent whale.  Room 10 was fortunate to go.  DOC and iwi were amazing and looked after her and will continue to do so through the night until she can be taken away to be buried.

The humpback whale was thought to have been 10-15 years old.  We were told she was probably on her way from Antarctica to the warmer waters amongst the Pacific Islands to mate and have babies.  She has had a sample taken from her side which will be sent to Massey University for testing.  The cause of her death is unknown however DOC did tell us she had been dead for quite some time and was very 'gassy' when discovered first thing this morning.

Teacher Only Day @ Whakarongotai Marae

Tuesday 27th October
Waikanae School, Kapanui School and the local Kaumatua of Whakarongotai Marae are gathering together for a day of learning.  We have an extremely busy day lined up and the collaborative involvement with Kapanui School is another way we are trying to strengthen our community for our tamariki.  Thanks to Miss Lake and the local iwi, our schools will be working together to learn about the maori culture, it's importance and what it means to the children we teach.  Support staff and our school relievers have been invited to attend this day of learning also.  I'll post more photos on the day :)
See you all on Wednesday!

Our 2 Worm Farms

Our wormy worms are getting hungry.  We better get collecting when Term 4 starts.
I checked in on them this weekend and one of them had started leaking!  I emptied the 'worm wee' which you can see in the picture.  If you have any 1L plastic milk bottles at home, perhaps you could bring them to school and we can start filling them full of 'worm wee' for our gardens.

Skoolbo

Check out what was in my cubby hole this weekend for you all ......
Congratulations Room 10!  Cool stickers, bookmarks and a certificate.

Where are Room 12 and 13?

Rooms 12 and 13 will be removed over the holidays.  They are the oldest and cruddiest (is that a word?) in the school.  Rooms 11, 18, 19 and our 10 are the next in line for makeovers or demolition.
